WHERE DOES COMFORT FOOD COME FROM?
Before we get on to recipes, it’s interesting to think about what actually constitutes the ‘comfort food’ that is so commonly associated with the colder seasons… Where did this phrase come from? And why do we find certain foods so comforting?
Interestingly, WHEN THE OXFORD DICTIONARY ADDED A DEFINITION FOR THE PHRASE ‘COMFORT FOOD’ IN 1997, IT TRACED ITS ORIGINS BACK TO A 1977 WASHINGTON POST ARTICLE ABOUT SOUTHERN COOKING. The article stated, ‘Along with grits, one of the comfort foods of the South is black-eyed peas.’
But it appears that the Oxford Dictionary was wrong… The author of the Washington Post article rejected the idea that he coined the term, and set the record straight in 2013 - ‘I don’t really believe I created the term, [but since 1977] it has been one of my favourite food descriptors.’
In fact, it seems as though THE PHRASE HAS BEEN AROUND SINCE AT LEAST 1966, WHEN A PALM BEACH POST EMPLOYED THE TERM IN AN ARTICLE, it read: ‘Adults, when under severe emotional stress, turn to what could be called ‘comfort food’—food associated with the security of childhood, like mother’s poached egg or famous chicken soup.’
So, whilst the true origins of the descriptor are unknown, it seems as though from its earliest days it has been used to describe the idea that people tend to turn to nostalgic, hearty food when the body and soul are in need of a little TLC! Hence why these recipes are so popular as the weather cools down.
But why is this? Apparently, consuming energy-dense, high-calorie foods can signal the reward system in the human brain. This can create a sensation of pleasure or relaxation. Another factor that plays into this is that consuming calories also warms you up, as you are adding more energy into your body. Put simply, eating these kinds of foods can make us feel good and warmer!
SO WHAT ARE COMFORT FOODS?
With comfort foods having such strong ties to nostalgia, it’s unsurprising that they vary from person to person. As long as it makes you feel happier, it’s a comfort food! Here are a few examples of what may be considered comfort foods for a few different countries:
Italy - Gnocchi
Japan - Teppanyaki, udon
Spain - Roasted chestnuts, grilled lamb
Turkey - Spicy meat dumplings
China - Rice porridge with eggs
United Kingdom - Shepherd’s Pie
USA - Tater tot casserole, mac n’ cheese
Germany - schnitzel with gravy
